This learning activity may be used by nurses to review for the medical surgical specialty certification from the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN), which grants the credential Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN�) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), which grants the credential Registered Nurse-Board Certified (MEDSURG-BC™). It provides an overview of the gastrointestinal system of the medical-surgical certification exam based on the exam blueprint. Nurses preparing for the certification exam may find this activity helpful, in addition to the medical-surgical certification review question bank.

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education activity you will be able to:

  1. discuss the management of GI conditions seen in patients on the medical-surgical unit.
  2. explain the anatomy and functions of the gastrointestinal (GI) system.
