Activity Steps
Learning Objectives
After completing this continuing education activity you will be able to:
- Explain the results of the study of the relationships between objective biomechanical tests of medical devices and clinical outcomes that help inform clinicians using these devices.
- Synthesize the background information that informed the study.
Learning Outcomes
Seventy-five percent of participants will demonstrate knowledge of a study conducting objective biomechanical testing of medical devices known to cause medical device related pressure injuries (MDRPIs) in critically ill adults and comparing those results with clinical outcomes associated with each device by achieving a minimum score of 70% on the outcomes-based posttest.Disclosures
Biomechanical materials testing and personnel for this work was funded by an AACN Impact Grant from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, Aliso Viejo, CA, USA. This work is supported by the Israeli Ministry of Science & Technology (Medical Devices Program Grant no. 3-17421, awarded to Professor Gefen in 2020) and by the European Union?s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 811965; project STINTS (Skin Tissue Integrity under Shear), awarded to Professor Gefen. The authors thank clinical and operation partners at the University of Chicago Medical Center including: 1) Skin Care Team RNs and WOC nurses who participate in data collection during monthly quality surveys and 2) Strategic Sourcing-Supply Chain Department and Respiratory Therapy Department who verified the products in use during the study period.
