Description

Inequity is a longstanding global issue, and its impact is deep, far and broad.  Learners are shaped by where they fall on the inclusion and equity continuum and the same is true for those on the receiving end of care.  The life journey, inclusive of the learning experience, care delivery and health outcomes and are all impacted by diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I).  The provision of care and the experience patients and families have from the very practitioners we education is shaped by this reality. Nurses can be highly influential in the healthcare arena and in society overall.  Nursing education programming must recognize diversity, equity and inclusion as fundamental in design and delivery, not as a special topic or task.  Educators and organizations should identify incorporation of DE&I principles as a performance expectation anywhere education takes place.

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education activity you will be able to:

  1. Define and differentiate diversity, equity and inclusion (DE &I) including history and impact.
  2. Compare allyship, bystander and other phenomena that contribute to the DE&I.
  3. Identify common pitfalls that lead to lack of DE&I especially in healthcare and discuss steps nurses can implement immediately and over time.

Learning Outcomes

After watching the Lippincott Nursing Education Innovation Summit, at least 80% of participants will identify new skills related to nursing education by describing how they will apply innovations in nursing education in their school of nursing curriculum.
