Purpose of Activity

This journal club will identify key concepts related to the Journal of Christian Nursing article, Simulating the Refugee Experience to Cultivate Cultural Competence and Sensitivity 39(1), 48-51. Author Stephanie Wynn participated in the discussion along with Kathy Schoonover-Shoffner, Editor-in-Chief of JCN and Kristen L. Mauk, Senior Editor of JCN.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to define the terms refugee, immigrant, and asylum-seeker and how these vulnerable populations differ.
  2. Participants will strengthen their cultural competence and sensitivity by gaining understanding of the traumatic experiences that affect refugees' health and the barriers to healthcare in the host country
  3. Participants will describe the three C model of care and how to apply the model in a practice setting.
  4. Participants will recognize the "tightrope of caring" inherent in refugee healthcare that necessitates attention to self awareness/self-care.
