Purpose of Activity

To provide information on the pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment of constipation.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify causes of constipation and the dietary changes, bulk forming agents, surfactants, and stimulants used to treat it.
  2. Summarize the use of osmotic agents and laxatives to treat constipation, as well as pharmacologic treatments for opioid-induced constipation (OIC) and chronic idiopathic constipation.
